Crack cocaine, a central nervous system stimulant, is one of the most highly addictive drugs around. It is a smokable form of cocaine that is made by adding baking soda and water to pure cocaine and cooking it down to form little smokable rocks.

Crack cocaine, like other illicit substances, is also cut with other agents and many of them can be very dangerous. Recently it is being cut with fentanyl. One hit, and it could stop your heart immediately.

Why Do People Smoke Crack Cocaine

What is Crack Cocaine?

Crack cocaine is a freebase form of cocaine. When smoked it stimulates dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain, and produces a quick, very short-lived intense euphoric feeling. It also increases energy and confidence, causes heightened awareness, and decreases appetite and the need for sleep.

Since the high from crack cocaine only last for a few minutes, it causes intense cravings after only one hit and makes the user want more and more. This is what makes the drug so addicting.

Also, the withdrawal from crack cocaine is very hard to get through. Often its users will continue using it for days upon days at a time just to prevent it from coming down. You essentially crash once you stop using it.

Why Do People Turn to Crack Abuse?

Mental illness and untreated mental illness in this country is at epidemic highs. So many are fighting depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, and other mental health disorders and a lot don’t even realize what’s happening. One of the main reasons people turn to drugs is to self-medicate from these mental health conditions. The drugs essentially numb the pain for a very short time and then usually make those mental health disorders worse.

Take for instance someone like myself who suffers a bad injury on a roller coaster 22 years ago. I go to the doctor and am prescribed a muscle relaxer and a mild opiate pain reliever. At the time I was in an abusive relationship and also dealing with both anxiety and depression; I had no idea.

The only thing I knew is that these medications were not only helping my physical pain but were also “helping” my mental and emotional pain. I kept calling the pharmacy for refills, and the doctor kept approving them. This went on for over a year and then she cut me off. By then I was already in a fully addictive state. It’s fair to assume that this happens to others as well.

What Experts Say Are Reasons for Smoking Crack

The National Institute on Drug Abuse published an article titled, “The Science of Drug Use: A Resource for the Justice Sector”, which reports the following:

People use drugs for many reasons: they want to feel good, stop feeling bad, or perform better in school or at work, or they are curious because others are doing it and they want to fit in. The last reason is very common among teens. Drugs excite the parts of the brain that make you feel good. But after you take a drug for a while, the feel-good parts of your brain get used to it. Then you need to take more of the drug to get the same good feeling. Soon, your brain and body must have the drug just to feel normal. You feel sick, awful, anxious, and irritable without the drug. You no longer have the good feelings that you had when you first used the drug. This is true if you use illegal drugs or if you misuse prescription drugs. Misuse includes taking a drug differently than how your doctor tells you to (taking more or crushing pills to “shoot up” or snort), taking someone else’s prescription, or taking it just to get “high.” Drug use can start as a way to escape—but it can quickly make your life worse. Some other reasons people use drugs can include: in a social setting or for social glorification, pressured by their peers, boredom, grieving after a loss, reducing stress, or thrill-seeking. Some can try a substance once and never pick it up again, while others can’t. For many addicts what starts out as social use, peer pressure, or experimentation quickly turns into an addiction. Drugs and alcohol make us feel good.

Why Do People Smoke Crack Cocaine?

We’ve already talked about why people do drugs, but why do people smoke crack cocaine? Most people that use crack cocaine are polysubstance abusers. Polysubstance abuse refers to a person that uses at least 3 different substances and doesn’t have a favorite or one particular drug of choice.

Different drugs affect people differently. Some may prefer stimulants, while others prefer downers like alcohol or opioids and yet others prefer a combination of substances. Being a recovering addict myself, I think it’s whatever takes the stress and pain away the best and quickest.

Crack cocaine came out in the mid-1980s. People smoke it because it produces a quick or immediate high, the high is very intense, and it is an easy and relatively cheap drug to produce and get. This makes the drug readily available and affordable.
